Ureteroscopic stone removal surgery is a type of treatment performed using a small-caliber endoscope that is passed through the urethra without making any incisions in your body. The stone is drawn with special tools or crushed with a laser.
The thin rigid endoscope is passed through the urethra into the ureteral canal and stones are crushed using laser.
After the procedure, a stent is placed across the ureter; this helps the healing and painless passage of the stone particles. Stent placement also helps to prevent complications such as kidney infection.
URS is ideal for stones in the lower and middle ureter. For the upper ureteral stones, URS can be difficult as the ureter is tortuous and there may be kinks and twists, so the rigid scope is not easy to move up.

Additionally, manipulation in the upper ureter can push the stone into the kidney, complicating the process. In such cases, RIRS or PCNL may be other alternative methods.
The URS process usually takes 30-60 minutes.
Preoperative examinations such as USG, Tomography, and urine culture are mandatory. Detailed pre-anesthesia controls are made.
Patients are hospitalized on the day of surgery and usually discharged within 24 hours.
Possible complications such as mild to moderate bleeding and fever are occasionally encountered and easily treated.
